METHOD BOOKS
I lean toward using method books written by James and Jane Smisor Bastien but I am comfortable teaching from any books you already have. In addition to working through a lesson and theory book, I like to choose a theme for each month and challenge students to learn one song from that genre. Students then perform these songs at group lesson.
GROUP LESSON
Each month I hold a group lesson for all students to attend together. During this 60 minute session, each student performs, and I teach a mini-lesson focusing on the life of a composer. We then have a group theory activity and end with a celebration. Each group lesson has a different theme on which the performance, mini-lesson and activity are based.
eg: For the month of February we studied classical music. Each student learned and performed a classical piece on his or her level. The mini lesson was about Ludwig Van Beethoven. The activity involved listening to various songs by Beethoven, and determining the time signature.
